Can I add you on facebook? Is this the new phone number?

Is Facebook becoming the new phone number? This is a question that I have often thought about; More and more, I am noticing myself as well as others always asking; Are you on facebook, answer if yes, reply, nice, I will add you. I swear people don't even bother to ask for phone numbers anymore because facebook really is just as good and sometimes better, because you can avoid the awkwardness of making that first call, which especially applies to myself and my stutter/voice crack embarrassing first minute of the first phone call, but really doesn't that strike you as so impersonal or too personal (read later), isn't someone being interested in you enough to ask for your phone number just make you feel better than asking to add you on facebook and furthermore, another obvious reason is, allowing someone a snapshot into your life ie. facebook profile filled with your interests, pics and information. Doesn't that take all the fun out of finding out who you are? My personal belief, I will stay old skool and keep asking for a phone number but every now and again I might ask, to add you on facebook because hey its an in and really isn't that all we are really looking for.
