For many people depression is a debilitating disease of the mind...I should know, I had it for a time and had to battle it for a few years.
Is it fair for the adjudication committee to dismiss Mr. Lopes from his position for having depression? Personal problems aren't under the jurisdiction of the Board of Governors unless it defaces/tarnishes its image. Judging from how the entire situation was played, I believe that Mr. Lopes was unjustly treated.
This is university people...we have the infrastructures to provide students with ample support, especially those suffering from a debilitating disorder like depression. This university can spend millions of dollars putting new turf on TD Waterhouse, it sure as hell can spend a few thousand dollars getting more counsellors and improving student health service coverage for EVERYONE.
